Humankind is exploring the ocean and its wonders. The deep waters are mostly unknown to the human eye. It can be difficult to visualize that idea of the unknown. Therefore we need something to hold on to, to help us grasp the unanswered questions, and to create something beautiful with the fantasies that roam our minds. Seaweed is the physical fear of our imagination. It is the reminder of the beauty that is out there, the world outside our busy life. We want to be excited and comfortable at the same time. It is the treasure we will take from the ocean and turn it into something to cherish forever.

Seaweed has been known to have many beneficial properties. Such as antioxidants that will slow the aging process of the skin, as well as anti-inflammatory properties when it is made into a fiber. Imagine all of the beneficial effects of seaweed converted into a fabric. While wearing the seaweed textile you will feel comfortable, healthy and beautiful at the same time.

Seaweed is available in overflow. Because of climate change the water is getting hotter, which results the seaweed to grow faster. Because of photosynthesis, more seaweed will grow where there is more CO2 in the air. This is a source we can keep using for the textile industry, as it is a sustainable source. There is no need for extra chemicals or agriculture to grow the seaweed, compared to cotton, which requires a lot of water and must be sprayed with pesticides and insecticides. Using seaweed as a source for textiles does not impact the biodiversity of the area it grows in. On the contrary, it even helps with the biodiversity of nature. Seaweed grows faster when there is a lot of CO2 in the air. Too much seaweed will be unhealthy for nature.

For creating a seaweed fiber via the lyocell process, chemicals are still needed. Some companies are striving to develop new greener alternatives to clean up this process. TENCEL fiber, made by the Austrian company Lenzing, is a good example of this effort.

I believe that seaweed offers a solution to clean up and even improve the textile industry.

Cherish the Sea(weed)

The focus is on the beauty of seaweed in its original state. Seaweed comes in all sorts an shapes. Every species is unique. The goal is to show the beauty of seaweed in prints we didn’t think we’d need. It wil give a comfortable feeling because of all the healthy antioxidants that are found in seaweed. These antioxidants will slow down the ageing process of the skin. You skin will benefit from wearing these textiles.

Sea-fi

The Shapes of seaweed are very natural and flowy. It is natural. What will happen if we take this out of context and add the technology of today. It will be a modernistic fantasy world. What if it is possible to let the a print change colors when it comes in contact with heat. Seaweed fabric is anti-inflammatory, so the possibility to play with heat and create a whole new print is a future perspective.

Touch of treasure

Seaweed itself is not flat and untextured. Most of the time it has a lot of volume (hairy, round and even hard). The focus is on the 3D feel of prints. Showing the beauty of volume in the prints through embroidery, layering and vacuum sucking. The benefit in wearing these textured seaweed textiles is that the fabric itself is detoxifying. Seaweed in its natural state in the ocean is known to be detoxifying, but even when produced into a textile, this component is still present.
