Escaping The Ice | Glacier ice in the arctic reveals previously unknown viruses of over 30 000 years old. Researchers have found 33 viruses, of which 28 are still alive. Half of these are unknown. Among these viruses there could possibly be a deadly one that can be released from the glaciers. As a result of climate change, ice in the arctic and other parts of the world is melting and meltwater could carry a harmful virus into the world, causing a new pandemic.

What happens if one of these viruses is released and what would happen to us? This collection takes on this question. In 5 outfits, each design shows a phase in the journey of the virus. From the ice to the human, the virus has a different effect on its surroundings in each phase, visualized in the silhouettes and the material of the designs.

By showing you a collection full of print and colors “created by the virus”, the end goal is to make you think about our future and the possibility of an outcome that is much worse. One pandemic in a lifetime is enough.

A virus has a unique set of characteristics that defines it. These can affect human bodies on the inside and out. A virus enters the cell and changes it from the inside. Possibilities of characteristics are endless.

This new virus leaking from the ice will add a toxic to out skin, cause huge swelling from cold sores and makes our skin melt.

ESCAPING THE ICE

While  working on materials for this collection, the focus was to visualize the effect of the virus on a human body in a textile.  By using multiple techniques, both traditional and sustainable, a collection of fashion prints are created that tell the concept, and can also be used for different end goals.
